In this guide, we’ll take a look at how use the Skills functionality in Timewize. Skills are important for linking resources to opportunities and projects, and understanding how much to charge for services.
If you perform work through Panel arrangements, Timewize helps you to align your organisation’s framework for structuring services and resource capabilities to Panel skills.
To create and set up skills, we’ll walk you through the following steps:
- Defining Standard Levels for your organisation’s Standard Skills
- Setting up your Standard Skills and linking these to your Standard Levels
- Adding Panels through which your company is likely to pursue opportunities and provide services and setting up skill equivalencies for the Panels
Defining Standard Levels for your organisation’s Standard Skills #
Standard Levels are labels used to distinguish resource experience and expertise against each of your organisation’s Standard Skills. Timewise suggests creating three or four Levels which may serve as generic labels across all of your Standard Skills (e.g. “Expert”), although you may choose to create different labels depending on the Standard Skills you’ll be setting up in the next step (e.g. “Expert Strategic Writer”).
- Navigate to the Admin Control Panel by clicking on the Settings icon in the top right corner of the menu bar.
- Within the Admin Control Panel, there is a column on the left with all of the administrator settings. Hover over the icons to see the name of each setting. Click on Standard Levels.
- Click the Add Level button in the top right corner and create a label for the Level (e.g. “Expert”). Click Save.
- Repeat for each Level.
Setting up your organisation’s Standard Skills #
Use Standard Skills to set up your organisation’s core skillsets. These should reflect your organisation’s framework for structuring services and resource capabilities.
- Repeat for all the relevant Standard Levels you wish to link to the Standard Skill by clicking Add Skill and selecting another Level Name in the new row created.
- Tip: Timewize uses a 7-star rating to cater for the number of SFIA skill levels. The number of stars has no impact on how you create your Standard Levels – instead, it allows Timewize to chronologically order the Standard Levels created from least to most senior based on the relative number of stars for Standard Levels against a single Standard Skill.
Connecting Standard Skills to Panels #
- In the Admin Control Panel, navigate to the administrator setting called Panels.
- Click Add Panel.
